Water – Nature’s Best Medicine
Up to 60% of our bodies are water. 71% of the earth is covered by water. There’s a big hint here- water should form a large percentage of our dietary intake- but it rarely does- here’s why:
- Are you really hungry?
Our bodies are crying out to replenish their depleted water stocks. Many people interpret dehydration as hunger pangs and eat when in fact a drink of water may be all that’s required. We should be drinking 2.5 litres or 6 pints of water a day. More if we’re involved in strenuous exercise or sweating due to heat. Eating instead of drinking water when the body is dehydrated not only leads to excess weight gain but the system becomes further dehydrated by processing the dry food its been given instead of water.
- Do you suffer headaches?
If there is no underlying medical condition, its likely that headaches will be caused by dehydration. Each brain cell requires a cushion of water to function correctly and if we could see our brains they would look like the spongey mass we are used to seeing in diagrams. When we don’t drink enough the brain resembles a dried prune and every cell has reduced function because its being denied the environment it requires to operate efficiently.
- Water not liquid.
Many people are aware of the risks of dehydration and will increase their liquid intake, but the body needs water not “drinks”. Caffeine for example leaches more water from the body than the volume of liquid delivered in the cup. In other words a cup of coffee will leave you with less water in the body than before you drank it. Fizzy drinks are sugar or synthetic sweetener heavy which creates different health hazards and the carbon that makes them carbonated strives to bond with calcium in the body leaching it from bones and making us prone to brittle bones and osteoporosis. If you hate the taste of plain water the best way to drink it is in a fruit squash or herbal tea.
Drinking water flushes out toxins, helps with weight loss, gives us clear skin and whites of eyes and makes every organ in the body operate more efficiently. Why would we deny ourselves these advantages?
