Three Top Summer Skincare Secrets

Is your skin looking dull, lifeless or dry as you reveal it for summer?

The appearance known as “dry skin” which has a matt or even scaly look is in fact the presence of loose dead skin cells on the surface. No amount of moisturising will change this appearance. The cells are already dead and can’t be bought back to life. This is what you should be doing:

  • Exfoliate

Great skincare begins with exfoliation. Dead skin cells must be removed. Adding moisturiser directly to skin in this state just creates a porridge of waste on the surface blocking pores and preventing the next layer of healthy skin from seeing the light of day.

  • Dry Brushing

Firm stroke brushing with a soft dry brush is the best way to remove dead skin cells. This skincare regime also boosts circulation and makes you feel invigorated. You’ll be surprised by the amount of dandruff-like residue that’s removed.

  • Moisturise

Only after removing this built-up waste layer should you apply a skincare moisturiser. Using products before exfoliation just creates a glue binding the dull lifeless layer to your skin. Remember externally applied products cannot effect the deep layers where skin cells are “born” so ignore hype about “regeneration”. Basic sunflower oil is one of the best skincare moisturisers.

  • Diet

The condition of our skin is determined at the deepest layer where cells are “born” not on the surface. You wouldn’t keep washing and waxing a broken down car expecting it to miraculously start, you’d fix its engine or refuel it. Similarly, drinking plenty of water and eating foods rich in Omega 3 oils such as fish will ensure your new skin cells get the best start and don’t need repair later.
